Beware of Council Tax doorstep offers

Residents in Guisborough have reported visits from a man who tells the householder they are paying too much Council Tax.
He then promises to take their details, on a ‘no win, no fee’ basis, with one householder told to expect a £1,500 cut.
The Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources Councillor Peter Scott said: “We would urge people to ignore these type of callers.
“Please be vigilant and if you have elderly relatives or neighbours, please alert them, too.
“We believe this may be an unscrupulous scam carried out in the hope of deceiving vulnerable or unsuspecting residents. If you are in doubt, no matter how convincing the caller may be, hang up and refer the matter to the police by calling 01642 326326.”
The reports follow a similar warning earlier this week from Northumberland County Council, asking residents to be on their guard after hearing members of the public are being offered Council Tax refunds by someone claiming to work for the council.
Councillor Scott added: “Anyone who has concerns about the level of their Council Tax and the help they may be able to receive should contact us on 01642 774774 and we will be happy to discuss.
“Residents can also raise their concerns about Council Tax with their elected councillors who are always willing to assist residents with these issues.”
Council Tax banding is the responsibility of a Government department, the Valuation Office and all Council Tax payers are entitled to challenge their Council Tax band.
Advice on appeals is available on the Valuation Office website, www.voa.gov.uk, or the local valuation office at St Marks House, St Marks Court, Thornaby, telephone 01642 416700.
