Plugged into a greener Redcar and Cleveland

ELECTRIC vehicle drivers in Redcar & Cleveland can relax and recharge their batteries thanks to the installation of the first of 12 new charging points across the borough.

The scheme part of the plugged in places initiative provides local authorities in the region with the opportunity to apply to One North East for match funding to install charging points in their area.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council have taken the lead and the first charging point is now in place for the public to use at Belmont House car park in Guisborough.

Charging points will also be installed at the following locations over the coming months:

  • Guisborough Forest & Walkway centre car park – Pinchinthorpe
  • Redcar & Cleveland House Car Park – Redcar
  • Windy Hill Lane car park – Marske
  • Cat Nab car park – Saltburn
  • North Road car park – Loftus
  • Westgate – Guisborough
  • High Street – Redcar.

Cabinet Member for Highways, Planning and Transport, Councillor Helen McLuckie said:

“As the major vehicle manufacturers reduce the cost of electric vehicles and improve their performance and reliability it is important the Council does all it can to ensure the infrastructure is in place to support it.

These new charging points will establish an improved network in the area making travel by electric vehicle much more attractive for the public.”

Drivers of electric vehicles can register to use the charging points by visiting www.chargeyourcar.org.uk

The website also provides information on charging point locations, journey planning and links to the switch to EV vehicle trial.

The North East is at the forefront of low carbon technology and was chosen as one of three areas to trial the roll out of electric vehicle technology, along with London and Milton Keynes.

Old Scam doing the rounds Again.Don’t get Caught.

30th November 2011.

I have just received a telephone call from an Asian Gentleman saying that he was calling on behalf of Microsoft and that my PC had a fault.
I promptly replied that it did not and wished him good day.
If he calls you I suggest you do the same.
I realized when I had put the phone down that I should have asked for his name ETC. And then I could have reported the call.

New charges for clear sacks

A £2 CHARGE for Redcar & Cleveland residents to get 50 clear sacks for plastic and cardboard recycling will come into force on January 1.

Residents can purchase clear sacks from several places in the Borough.

These include all libraries, the tourist information centres at Redcar and Guisborough, Redcar & Cleveland House in Redcar, Belmont House in Guisborough, Low Grange Health Village in South Bank and Fairway House in Dormanstown.

Plastic and cardboard will only be collected when presented in one of the hessian sacks previously provided by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, a clear sack or carrier bags.

Plastic and cardboard presented in a black or non-transparent sack will not be collected.

Redcar Christmas lights extravaganza

REDCAR’S Christmas light switch-on is set to be bigger than ever this year. Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council has planned a festive extravaganza weekend, which will take place on November 25, 26 and 27.

Friday 25th will see the High Street lit up in spectacular style at the hands of our special guest Coronation Streets heart throb Jason Grimshaw aka Ryan Thomas.

The Mayor of Redcar & Cleveland, Councillor Olwyn Peters, said: “This is going to be a spectacular weekend all brought together with the Town’s festive cheer. I look forward to joining in and sharing the important duty of switching on the lights.

The switch-on is part of a day of festive activities in the high Street, with the actual switch-on taking place on the Main Stage next to the Town clock. The build up to the event will start at 4pm when TFM Radio will take to the stage.

The running order for the event will then be:

4.30pm – Santa will make his way to the stage for a performance of by the winners of ‘A Song For Redcar’
4.45pm – Ryan Thomas will make his was on to the stage
4.55pm – Children from One Step Ahead Dance Studio in Eston will showcase their dance skills in a up tempo performance
5.00pm – Ryan Thomas will hit the big red button for this year’s switch-on
5.05pm – One Step Ahead Dance Studio will perform the 2nd routine
5.15pm – Topline will take to the stage for some traditional carols
5.30pm – The event will close

Over the rest of the weekend watch Redcar transform into a festive wonderland with a special log cabin market, carol singers, art and craft fairs, the Redcar donkeys and much much more. The markets will be open between 9am and 4pm on Saturday and 10am and 4pm on Sunday.

New play area for Loftus

Local children in Loftus are delighted with a new play area unveiled this week by the Mayor, Councillor Olwyn Peters.

Loftus Community Forum acquired funding of £35,000 from Impetus Environmental Trust with additional funding of £10,000 made by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Loftus Community Forum, Impetus and Loftus and Lockwood Neighbourhood Team worked in partnership by hosting an exhibition and consultation sessions in the local library. Local children were given the opportunity to select the items of equipment they thought would be best for their area and which they would enjoy most. This new play area in Tees Street, will give young people the opportunity to play safely knowing they had an input into the choices.

Councillor Sheelagh Clarke, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Tourism and Rural Affairs said ” The young people of the area had the chance to choose the items they wanted by working with the teams. This is a great way to bring the community together and give the young people the opportunity to invest in their own area”.

Tributes paid to councillor Glynis Abbott

REDCAR & Cleveland Borough Council is sad to announce that Councillor Glynis Abbott, who represented the Newcomen ward, has passed away.

Councillor George Dunning, Leader of the Council, said: “It is very sad indeed to no longer have Glynis as a councillor on Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Glynis Abbott was a formidable political opponent who was well respected by us all here in Redcar & Cleveland.

Redcar jobs fair welcomes young unemployed

YOUNG unemployed residents across Redcar & Cleveland are being invited to a jobs fair on 10 November to support them back into employment or training.

The event, taking place at the Redcar Business Centre between 10.00 am 4.00 pm, is open to any young person in the area between the ages of 16 25 not in education, employment or training.

Over 600 invites have already been sent out to young people across the Borough however organisers are keen to make it clear that all young people from across the borough are welcome.

Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Cllr Mark Hannon said:

“The Council is committed to providing opportunities for young people in the area to help them into employment and training.

This event brings together some of the areas biggest employers and provides young people with the chance to find out about the employment and training opportunities on offer to them.”
