———-
Thanks to the Market’s brand new links with North East England Farmer’s Markets (NEEFM), an annual subscription of £10 will see Saltburn Market Friends receive a quarterly newsletter about seasonal foods and foodie events throughout the North-East – plus VIP invitations to visit local farmers and producers to see how their food is made. Lorna Jackson of Market organisers Foodfirst, said: “Groundbreaking TV chefs like Rick Stein, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver have all helped bring about a huge jump in the numbers of people who care about where their food comes from, and who are keen to actively support their local food producers, so the Friends Scheme is a fantastic way of meeting like-minded people, finding out more about Farmers’ Markets throughout the North-East as well as Saltburn, and even becoming involved to help develop the market in the future.”
—————————–
Saltburn’s bustling Farmers’ Market has proved a huge hit since launching in Easter 2008, and now regularly attracts over 3,500* people to the popular seaside town for its eagerly anticipated monthly events.

Now that the brand new Sainsbury’s store and car-park has put an extra spring back into the town, market organisers are expecting a further jump in the number of shoppers for Saltburn’s ever-popular mix of locally produced organic meat, game, fish, cheese, fruit & vegetables, wine, pies, cakes and artworks.

Veronica Boland of Saltburn Allotments Association said: “We have over 100 allotments here, so the Market is a great place to bring what we grow directly to the public every month – and all the proceeds from our stall go directly towards keeping the allotments in ship-shape condition.

“Everything we sell is grown on our allotments just a few minutes walk from the Market itself. It doesn’t get fresher than that.”
———————————-

YOUNG crime scene investigators are to put the menace of dog fouling under the microscope next week – as a major crackdown on the problem gets under way.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council is launching a new campaign that warns dog owners to clean up after their pets and urges residents to dish the dirt on serial offenders in East Cleveland.

And the drive will begin with pupils at Lockwood Primary School, in Boosbeck, donning CSI-style white suits on Monday, July 5, in a display designed to highlight the fact that dog fouling is a crime.

Local residents have been invited to the event to hear about the scale of the problem and what they can do to prevent it, as well to visit stalls from organisations including the Dogs’ Trust and Feedem Pet Supplies, of Guisborough.

The village of Boosbeck is one of the worst hotspots in the Borough and campaign posters will be distributed throughout the East Cleveland area.

Bags allowing residents and visitors to safely dispose of dog mess will be available in local libraries.

As the initiative develops, talks will also be given in school assemblies and posters made available for residents to place in their windows.

Following its launch in East Cleveland, the campaign will be extended to cover the whole borough.

Councillor Dave McLuckie, Cabinet Member for Community Protection, said: “Dog fouling is one of the most serious environmental crimes we have to deal with.

“Irresponsible and selfish dog owners cause mess and misery for everyone else. They ruin our enjoyment of parks and play areas and spoil the streets of our villages and towns.

“They also pose a serious risk to the health of our children. We believe that there are no excuses for not cleaning up after your dog, and we will do everything in our power to crack down on this issue.”

PLANS aimed at improving a market town for residents, traders and visitors are to go on show this week.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council is committed to boosting the local economy and increasing tourist numbers in Guisborough after securing £600,000 of Regional Development Programme for England funding from One North East.

And the authority has appointed design firm Atkins to produce a series of options to take a crucial part of the project forward.

The company will present its ideas for the heart of Guisborough during a public consultation session, which takes place from Thursday, July 1, to Saturday, July 3, in the main hall at Sunnyfield House, Westgate.

The event runs from 3pm to 6pm on Thursday and Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Saturday, with visitors given the chance to comment on the proposals. The public response will allow the Council and Atkins to shortlist options before more detailed designs are drawn up.

Councillor Mark Hannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “The Guisborough market town scheme is designed to improve the area, boost trade and encourage more visitors.

“The plans going on display are an important feature of this work and we would very much welcome public feedback in helping us to take the project forward.”

The designs and a questionnaire will also be made available on the Councils website, at www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk

WORLD Cup revellers are being targeted by a major new campaign aiming to tackle domestic and sexual violence across Redcar & Cleveland.

The “If there is violence, break the silence” initiative will be taken to pubs and clubs across the Borough as part of a hard-hitting drive to cut numbers of offences and raise awareness of support available to victims.

The campaign has been launched by the Redcar & Cleveland Domestic & Sexual Violence Reduction Strategic Partnership (D&SVRSP).

And, to tie in with Cleveland Polices recently launched Operation Harmony, it will see staff from Eva Women’s Aid join officers in talking to revellers in Redcar town centre on Friday and Saturday nights.

Campaign posters, beer mats, stickers and leaflets will be displayed in local venues highlighting the authorities’ determination to bring offenders to justice and offer support and advice to sufferers.

The campaign launch has coincided with the World Cup, following previous rises in violence particularly alcohol-related – during major sporting events.

Two women are killed each week by a male partner or ex-partner and 47,000 are raped every year, while domestic and sexual violence also affects same sex relationships.

Helen McLuckie, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Wellbeing said: “The under-reporting of incidents of domestic and sexual violence continues to be a major problem and, with statistics linking big sporting occasions to increases in offences, this campaign is timely.

“The important message that such crimes should not be tolerated will be taken out to pubs and clubs, and we hope that this high-profile approach will pay dividends.”

For further information on the work of the D&SVRSP, telephone 01642 771693 or log onto www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/domesticviolence

Saltburn’s bustling Farmers’ Market is bringing out the bunting for a World Cup Special this Saturday. (12 June).
And, inspired by England kicking-off their World Cup campaign against the USA on the same day, stallholders have created a clutch of brand new World Cup treats.

Market co-ordinator Lorna Jackson said: “Saltburn Farmers Market has a real community ethos – a day for everyone to get into the spirit of things – and what’s better at bringing people together than England having a fantastic World Cup?

Standing alongside the Market’s ever-popular mix of organic meat, game, fish, cheese, organic fruit & vegetables, wine, pies, cakes and craft works, Lorna highlighted some of the stallholders’ special World Cup wonders.

Fancy Fudge love Peter Crouch – let’s face it, he scores goals for fun – and have created ‘Crouch’ s Cranberry Fudge,’ a tall fancy white chocolate fudge, with a cranberry topping forming the cross of St George. .

Real Meals are going straight to the top with a Fabio Capello World Cup Pie.
Cottage Cakes are making a special ‘Rooney’s Raspberry Tart,’ and Ledston Game have come up with a gorgeous Game & Chilli Sausage – definitely one for the bbq!

Published: 4th Jun 2010 by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council.

RESIDENTS across Redcar & Cleveland have been urged to stay on their guard against doorstep callers offering cash for gold.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s trading standards team has received reports from elderly homeowners of companies cold-calling at houses in a bid to buy up any unwanted gold.

The practice has grown in the wake of the worldwide gold shortage, with many firms seeking to cash in by buying old mobile phones and unwanted jewellery to recycle the gold content.

But trading standards officials stressed that residents should never answer the door to unknown callers.

Senior Trading Standards Officer Deborah Holmes said: “The value of scrap gold is constantly changing, so if anyone is serious about selling their gold they should research the market carefully, obtain a number of quotes from different jewellers and shop around for the best price.”

“We always advise people never to deal with doorstep sellers and the same applies in this case to doorstep buyers.

Dave McLuckie, the Councils Cabinet Member for Community Protection, said: “These companies are offering to buy gold by weight, but the value of unwanted jewellery is often much higher than just the scrap value of the gold.”

“People should not feel pressured into parting with family treasures at knock-down prices.

Jamie Oliver magic when it makes a welcome return to the Town’s Wellington Square on Saturday 29 May.

Yorkshire farmer Paul Langthorne is making his first
appearance at the Market alongside a growing number of new stalls .

The first Market in March proved a big hit with Stockton shoppers.
Paul said: “We’ve heard there’s a great atmosphere at Stockton, and we’re
really looking forward to coming along for the day.

We produce everything we sell right here on the farm itself, and it’s great to be able to reach out and meet the public directly on days like this.
Food doesn’t really get any fresher than that.”

There will be a fine range of organic meats, vegetables, wines, cakes, crafts and hot food on offer throughout a busy day.

A SEASIDE town is on the crest of a wave as it prepares to welcome a prestigious national sporting competition this weekend.

The National Surfing Championships are coming to Saltburn – the first time the event has been held in the North-East – and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council has been working hard to ensure the weekend is one to be remembered.

As well as watching the pro surfers at work, visitors can enjoy sand sculptures on the beach from 11am, a special TFM roadshow and the brilliant Marske band playing at the bandstand on both Saturday and Sunday between 2pm and 4pm.

Councillor Sheelagh Clarke, the Councils Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:

“It’s a real privilege to be able to host such a high-profile event and a wonderful way to showcase one of our most beautiful assets in the Borough.

“Saltburn is well known locally as a surfing destination and we hope that this event will put us well and truly on the surfing map. It is set to be a fantastic day for the whole family and I look forward to us welcoming many new visitors
