How to add a Gallery.

On the left under dashboard you will see gallery.  Click add gallery / image
On the drop down menu you will see the following.

 Add new gallery
Upload a Zip-File
Import image folder
Upload Images

Add new gallery

New Gallery: There will be a letter box here  _________________ browse
in which you give your gallery a name.
Create a new , empty gallery below the folder wp-content/gallery/
( Allowed characters for file and folder names are: a-z, A-Z, 0-9, -, _ )

As you will be inserting your own images I suggest you give the gallery your name followed by photos.

Now click the blue letter box (add gallery.)

The next step is to go to the bottom of the page where it says upload images.
First click the arrow in the choose gallery letter box (your gallery should now be in there)

Click the browse letter box to locate your your images.

You should have prepared your photos beforehand. If you have not done this I would suggest that you have a look at the paragraph named
( This is how I prepare my images) lower down this page before going any further.

Hold the shift key down and highlight each photo. Then click open. When you have done this click the upload images letterbox.

You will now see a list of your photos, that will reduce as each one is downloaded.
NOTE
This takes a little time so be patient.

When uploading has finished  Scroll to the top of the page and you will see  the number of picture(s) successfully added .

 To see your Gallery

 Do the following

Under dashboard /gallery (click manage gallery)

You will now see a list of all the gallery’s (yours will probably be at the bottom.)You can look at your gallery by clicking on the name (when it has opened there are other things you can do.) For instance you can give each photo a name and a description of the event. (optional)  (ignore tabs at this time )
This helps viewers to understand what they are looking at.

DO NOT FORGET TO CLICK  SAVE CHANGES BEFORE CLOSING THE GALLERY.

The next step is to link your gallery to a page.

First you need to add a page (unless you have  already done this)
To do this go to dashboard on the left. Go down to pages and click add new.

You now need to give the page a name (your name photos)
Before the next step (Adding a gallery to your page) move the curser down the page an inch or two.
To do this  (Press enter a few times)
This will give you room to add information etc. at a later date (see kens photos to understand what I mean)

To link the gallery to your page.

Go to the right hand end of the symbols on the page and click the one above the question mark.
You will now have a box called next generation gallery click the arrow on the top right and scroll down to your gallery and when you find it click insert.
You will now see the gallery name and number on your page.
This is a good time to click update page.

Now go up to preview on the top right of the page and click view.
If you are happy with what you see click publish.
If not save it as a draft page and later perhaps get one of the club members to help you.

To add more images to an existing gallery do the following.
Go to gallery then down to  add Gallery/images and click.
Next go to the bottom of the page as before, from the letterbox using the arrow find the gallery.
Next click  browse and navigate to the image  folder on your pc ,highlight the photos you require as before and click open then click upload as you did before
and wait for them to upload.
Now go to the preview changes box  at the top of the page below &  to the right of  publish to see the changes  ie. new images that you have just added.
If you are happy with the result and unless you have some more work you wish to do please log out.

Footnote
Allways remember that if you have made any alterations or added a new item to your page  you must click update  before closing otherwise they will not be added.

More on images.

You will probably need to resize your images before you upload them.
I have found that the recomended size of 1024 pixels wide with a dpi of 72 is fine.

This is how I prepare my images.

The first thing I do is to open a new folder in my pictures and give it the  name ( for gallery)
Next I open my first image and click copy. This leaves the original image in tact.
I now resize & check the brightness (digital cameras very often produce dark or dull images) contrast & colour & also it may need cropping etc.
Next I save it as a JPEG  to the (for gallery folder) & I usually give it a name as this stops that warning appearing telling you that the image already exists & do you want to overwrite it. (I cannot count the number of times that I have clicked yes by mistake.)

Example
If you had two images of a different paint brush & you did not name one of them brush two the warning would appear.

All this  preparation takes time  (sometimes it takes me several days to prepair all the images.) but it is worth remembering  once your image has been transfered to the gallery on the web page there is very little you can do to change it.

( If it is not right all you can do is delete it from the gallery & go through the whole proceedure once more)
I always think of the saying measure twice cut once.

You may at a later date wish to change
your gallery into an Album

This is how you do it.
Go to the drop down menu as before and click album.
On this page insert the name of your album into the add album letterbox.
This will be the name of the Gallery that you wish to make into an album.

 Now click add.

Next Go to the select album letterbox and on the drop down menu select your album.
The next step is to drag the gallery that you have chosen  to change into an album from the right hand side to the left and place into  the heading  letterbox.

It sometimes does this automatically.
Now make a note of the album page id and name.

EXAMPLE                Album Page ID 13 : hinderwell
Now click update in the blue box.

Now go to pages and  choose albums & images and click edit. Next  type the id of the album you have just created,it must be typed  exactly the same as the ones already there.

Example
[ template=extend]
The keys with the symbols/brackets that you require are the two on the right of key p.
Now go to preview changes to confirm.
Next click update page .

You now have your album & ofcourse the gallery is still there in case at a future date you wish to add more images.

Thats it Job done.
